Iran’s Escalating Humanitarian Emergency

Iran is currently experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis defined by mass civilian casualties, widespread detention, and an unprecedented wave of executions. Since late December, more than 3,000 people have reportedly been killed across at least 195 cities, many shot or beaten during crackdowns on public protests. Hospitals, cemeteries, and morgues are overwhelmed, while families are often denied access to the bodies of their loved ones.

At least 3,000 individuals are believed to be detained, many held in secret or unofficial facilities without access to lawyers or family contact. Human rights monitors report systematic torture, enforced disappearances, and forced confessions. Alarmingly, a significant number of detainees are children and minors, placing them at immediate risk of severe abuse and unlawful execution.

Executions have surged dramatically. Between 28 December 2025 and 10 January 2026, at least 143 prisoners were executed, averaging one execution every 2.5 hours. Among those killed are women, including the first women executed in Iran in 2026. These executions have intensified fear nationwide, extending punishment far beyond prison walls and devastating entire families.

Simultaneously, a near-total internet and communications blackout has isolated the population, preventing documentation of abuses and cutting families off from detainees. Prisons have been placed under complete lockdown, creating conditions for secret killings and mass disappearances.

What is unfolding is a large-scale humanitarian emergency. The scale, speed, and severity of these abuses place thousands of lives in immediate danger and demand urgent international attention.
