Iran senior cleric urges handing down more amputation sentences

Published by on May 24, 2015

naeem-abadiA high ranking Iranian cleric who is the representative of the Iranian regime’s Supreme Leader in Hormozgan province (southern Iran) has called for more inhumane punishment of hand amputations to be carried out.

Ghulam Ali Naeem Abadi, who regularly speaks at the state-organized weekly Friday Prayers sermon in the city of Bandar Abbas, in a cermon in the city of Mashhad on Wednesday said: “If the hands of a few of those who commit thievery in the society be cut off, they would set as examples for the others and security will be restored.”

“When the security would be restored in the society with amputating a few finger, why such punishments are not being implemented?” he asked.

Naeem Abadi who is also a member of powerful Assembly of Experts urged the authorities in the province to carry out the inhuman amputation and do not pay attention to the international criticism of the regime. “Our government is based on implementation of Islamic laws,” he said.

Naeem Abadi was referring to the inhuman laws sanctioning the gouging out eyes, amputation of hands, fingers and legs, and the execution of juvenile offenders, which the regime officials have described as ‘a unique particularity’ of the clerical dictatorship ruling the country.

Last year, in a debate at the United Nations, Mohammad Javad Larijani, the Secretary General of the clerical regime’s so-called High Council for Human Rights, defended the inhuman laws and urged the Western countries learn from it.

Abolish death penalty in Iran

Please Sign our Petition

Dear Secretary General of United Nations,

The number of executions is rising in Iran, journalists are being detained for doing their job and activists face cruel and degrading punishments, long prison terms and even execution. According to the most recent reports by Amnesty International and the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, “Iran’s judiciary continues to sentence child offenders to death, and carry out their execution by hanging”. Also, on August 9th, 2016 the son of late Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, Khomeini’s designated successor in 1988, published a shocking audio tape of his father’s meeting with the “Death Commission” which summarily and extra-judicially executed tens of thousands of political prisoners held in jails across Iran. The massacre was carried out on the basis of a fatwa by the regime’s then-Supreme Leader Khomeini.

We, the undersigned, hereby urge you to take up this issue and raise it in the General Assembly in order to;

1. Put pressure on Iran to immediately halt the executions and abolish death penalty in Iran.
2. Call on all Western governments to make any improvement in economic relations with Iran contingent on its human rights record.
3. Demand in its resolution on human rights violations in Iran, to bring the perpetrators of 1988 massacre (one of the worst atrocities the post-war world has ever seen – Geoffrey Robertson-QC) to justice before an international tribunal.

Executions must stop.
