ILA strongly condemns the visit of European officials to Tehran, the capital of public executionsPublished by International Liberty Association on August 3, 2017
More than 100 executions have been recorded to have taken place in Iran during July 2017. Amnesty international in a recent report titled: “Iran: ‘vicious’ crackdown on human rights activists under Rouhani”, highlights the fact that Iranian activists are given long jail sentences after trials “lasting only 45 minutes”. According to AI report alleged offences “include communicating with EU, UN and human rights organisations”. According to the report, “The Iranian authorities have waged a vicious crackdown on human rights defenders since Hassan Rouhani became president, demonising and imprisoning activists who dare to stand up for people’s rights”.
It is astonishing that many EU officials including Federica Mogherini, the EU’s Foreign Policy Chief have gone to Iran to attend the inauguration of the president who represents this regime.
We at ILA agree with Amnesty International conclusion that “The international community, and in particular the EU, must not stay silent over the outrageous treatment of human rights defenders in Iran”.
The EU leaders should instead publicly call for an end to executions, arbitrary arrests, unfair trials, and release of all political prisoners by Iranian regime.
