A Report About the Systematic Executions in Iran and the #1988Massacre

Published by on November 15, 2016

al-sharq_al_awsatOn November 5th 2016, Alsharq Al-Awsat the Premier Pan-Arab Daily Newspaper, published a report regarding the results of a research carried out by the researchers of Khalij-e-Fars (Persian Gulf) on the systematic executions and the massacre of the political prisoners in Iran in 1988.
The news reads:”the researchers did a research on the statistics and numbers as well as the events related to the systematic executions of Iran in 1988 when Khomeini came to power.
The dictatorial regime ruling Iran is established on the gallows that Khomeini founded. This regime tried to follow suppression and execution as a way to get rid of rivals who are the fan of thoughts and progress in the political sovereignty.
The executions are still continuing after 37 years. The research focused on the three charges of “waging war against Islam”, “acting against the national security” and “rooting corruption in the society”. These charges were the pretext of the Mullahs’ regime for eliminating the political dissidents.”
The researchers also wrote about the massacre of the political prisoners as well as the consequences of the tape release by Ayatollah Montazeri. In 1988, Khomeini ordered a Fatwa to legalize the execution of the PMOI (MEK) as well as those who are against the regime. Consequently, the Judiciary of Iran passed the sentence and executed 30,000 numbers of people, as PMOI (MEK) estimated.
Following the 40-minute tape released on the official website of the former successor of Khomeini, Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri in August 2016, the tape is a recorded conversation of Ayatollah Montazeri with the 4 members of Khomeini’s committee for the execution (known in media as the death committee).
Many of those executed were previously sentenced to imprisonment or they had already served or been serving their time in prison. In addition to that, some others also were those who had been released but imprisoned again with Khomeini’s order. These people were executed because they had only family connections with the members and supporters of PMOI (MEK).
The tape signifies that the former and current leaders of the Iranian regime played a significant role on following the orders of Khomeini and Khomeini himself signed the orders of executions. The orders were also notified by Khomeini’s son in a massive mobilization that anyone who supports the PMOI (MEK) will be sentenced to death penalty.
The current Supreme Leader, Khamenei was the president of those years and he was one of the main perpetrators of such decisions.
The current chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was the head of Parliament in those years and he was one of those who consulted Khomeini in his important decisions.
The reports point out the future prospects and consequences. If Hassan Rouhani takes the office for the second term it is likely that the number of executions will increase in the future since the current ruling regime of Iran has attempted so far to maintain its increasing trends by carrying out executions. This regime sees its political opponents as a direct threat to its own survival and continuity.

Abolish death penalty in Iran

Dear Secretary General of United Nations,

The number of executions is rising in Iran, journalists are being detained for doing their job and activists face cruel and degrading punishments, long prison terms and even execution. According to the most recent reports by Amnesty International and the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, “Iran’s judiciary continues to sentence child offenders to death, and carry out their execution by hanging”. Also, on August 9th, 2016 the son of late Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, Khomeini’s designated successor in 1988, published a shocking audio tape of his father’s meeting with the “Death Commission” which summarily and extra-judicially executed tens of thousands of political prisoners held in jails across Iran. The massacre was carried out on the basis of a fatwa by the regime’s then-Supreme Leader Khomeini.

We, the undersigned, hereby urge you to take up this issue and raise it in the General Assembly in order to;

1. Put pressure on Iran to immediately halt the executions and abolish death penalty in Iran.
2. Call on all Western governments to make any improvement in economic relations with Iran contingent on its human rights record.
3. Demand in its resolution on human rights violations in Iran, to bring the perpetrators of 1988 massacre (one of the worst atrocities the post-war world has ever seen – Geoffrey Robertson-QC) to justice before an international tribunal.

Executions must stop.
